Our Story

How it all started...

Over a century ago, a small group of Christians gathered together to worship together at the corners of Penn and Woodside Avenues.
Generations later, West Lawn United Methodist Church has grown from meeting in a little white barn, to a multi-building campus. Each week, a more diverse group of believers still meets at the corners of Penn and Woodside, with the original intent of our founders: to worship and love God, with all of our heart, soul, mind, and strength.

Expanding the vision...

Each week, West Lawn offers four, Christ-centered worship services, in both traditional and contemporary formats. Dynamic, Bible-based teaching, and inspiring music, set the tone for a powerful and uplifting worship experience. In addition to worship, faith formation begins with the youngest members of our church, and extends through adulthood. Children, youth, and young adults are all encouraged to be active participants in the life of our church.

Beyond our campus, West Lawn strives to love and serve our neighbors through a variety of missions. In our own local communities, West Lawn helps to feed the hungry and shelter the homeless. Outside of Berks County, we regularly send domestic and international missions teams to repair homes, develop relationships, and make disciples of Jesus Christ.

By empowering individuals and families, through education and service opportunities, West Lawn has created a culture of discipleship. As we have from the beginning, people of West Lawn will continue to be the hands and feet of Jesus. Together, we can show the world that we are Christians by our love.

A new commandment I give to you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.
John 13:34

Where we are headed...

It is our goal to empower our church family to grow in their faith and seek to commission them for ministry as disciples of Jesus Christ. We will continue to develop the church home partnership that encourages and equips parents and grandparents to be the spiritual leaders in their homes so we can guide, implement and foster servant involvement.  We are committed to nurture and build our connections to young adults from the greater Reading Area who seek to develop their personal walk with God through fellowship, worship, individual and group Bible study and mission opportunities.

We will continue to strengthen our Christian witness in the local community with the goal of broadening our outreach missions while partnering with local support agencies by offering our facility as a resource center location.

We will continue to strive for excellence in our weekly worship services with the intention of renewing and growing our 11:10 Community worship service by offering a family friendly experience that appeals to our congregation as well as to our local community.
